the rest of the stuff
live footage of me Sunday night
So I know that the rest of the categories might not be the most entertaining to watch on TV, but we still got some shit to talk about them, so here they are...
(Side note: I watched Buster Scruggs after posting part 1 and just have to say that it deserved a nomination for Best Picture)
Best Foreign Film:
who won it: Roma
who deserved it: Roma or Cold War
It's funny because when this award was presented I was certain that Roma was going to win best Picture, so I felt like Cold War should have walked away with this and let Roma win the big stuff. Unfortunately tragedy struck later on in the ceremony with the last award, so thank god Roma won. But if you haven't seen Cold War yet you have to have to have to see it immediately. And to the guy at the movie theater who declared Cold War to be nihilistic garbage, you sir, are the real garbage.
Best Animated Feature:
who won it: Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse
who deserved it: Spiderverse
This was a no brainer, duh. Spiderverse was easily in my top 5 favorites of the year and I feel like it could've deserved a Best Picture nom. We've see animated films get nominated before, so why not this one? Incredibles 2 was really good as well but it was no where near as fantastique as the original. That's all.

Best Documentary Feature:
who won it: Free Solo
who deserved it: ?
The only nominated documentary I saw this year was RGB which I don't really think deserved to be nominated. That being said all 4 of the other films looked appealing in the little clip they play when they present the awards. I've heard that Minding the Gap was really great, so I guess maybe that deserved it. Hale County, This Morning This Evening also looked really good, but idk. sorry.
Here are the nominees: Free Solo, Minding the Gap, Of Fathers and Sons, RGB, Hale County, This Morning, This Evening.
Best Documentary Short Sub:
who won it: Period. End of Sentence
who deserved it: ?
Again, I didn't see any of these but they all sounded good. Congrats to Period. End of Sentence, I guess.
Here are the nominees: Period. End of Sentence, Black Sheep, Lifeboat, Endgame, A Night at the Garden
Best Live Action Short:
who won it: Skin
who deserved it: ?
Lets face it, I'll probably never watch the shorts so I guess they all deserve it.
Nominees: Skin, Detainment, Fauve, Marguerite, Mother
Best Animated Short:
who won it: Bao
who deserved it: Bao
Bao made me cry, and that's all you have to do to be a winner in my book.

Annnndddd finally were done with short film hell, let's continue shall we
Best Original Score:
who won it: Ludwig Gorransson for Black Panther
who deserved it: Nicholas Britell for If Beale St. Could Talk
"I'm sorry Ludwig, Imma let you finish, but Nicholas should've won this award"- Kanye West. I watched one of those Genius videos on how Ludwig composed his score and it was really interesting how he composed/ found his inspirtation. But c'mon people, Nicholas wrote one of the best scores I've listened to in a while. I've recently gotten into listening to film scores so I've taken a lot of interest in this category and am very upset to see my man Nick lose again. He was already robbed in 2017 for his Moonlight score, which is a whole other story that I don't have time to get into, but he somehow managed to get robbed again. If anything he should have won to compensate for losing out last time he was nominated, but his score was actually really great this time and deserved to win regardless of how great his work on Moonlight was. But congrats to Ludwig on your win, and your Grammy wins as well.

Best Original Song:
who won it: Shallow
who deserved it: Buster Scruggs Song with the long title and Shallow
This was one of those years where all the nominees were just alright. Though Shallow and the one from Buster Scruggs were definitely better than the other three, good lord. Shallow is not the greatest song in the world, but that shit's catchy as hell and I actually threw my voice out trying to out sing Lady Gaga and Bradley during their performance. On the topic of that performance, they both deserve acting awards for having to pretend they aren't hardcore in love with each other in real life. The Buster Scruggs song was really cute and probably had better lyrics than Shallow so I guess I'll give it to both of them.
Best Sound Editing:
who won it: Bohemian Rhapsody
who deserved it: First Man
I feel like with this award and with sound mixing the academy was just like "well music = sound, and these awards have the word sound in them so lets give it to the shittiest biopic of the year". Literally any of the other nominees could have won and I would've been perfectly fine with it. To be fair I do understand where they were coming from with having to match all sorts of singing up to the actors, but still. These type of awards usually go to either space or superhero movies, so the competition came down to First Man v Black Panther. I didn't get a chance to see First Man but I'm pretty sure the sound was probably great and really hard to achieve, so good for them. And major shout out to A Quiet Place for getting a nomination because it had to have been hard as hell to work with the soundtrack from that film (I should add that John Krasinski probably should've been nominated for original screenplay, but that's none of my business.)

Best Sound Mixing:
who won it: Bohemian Rhapsody
who deserved it: First Man
Bohemian Rhapsody does make slightly more since winning this award, but I still gotta give it to First Man. Same with the Star is Born nomination, I'm not mad that they were nominated I just don't think that the mixing for a concerty movie was exciting as the sounds of Ryan Gosling in space.

Best Production Design:
who won it: Black Panther
who deserved it: The Favourite
I took some issue with this win because I saw Black Panther and it was a whole lotta CGI. I honestly don't know what constitutes production design, so I guess Black Panther could be worthy of winning. The Favourite, however, had such good design. I'd live in that palace, with all those tapestries, shiiiiiiiiiittttttt. The Roma design was committed to realism, and Mary Poppins was cute. I assume the design of First Man was the same as any other somewhat realistic movie set in the 60's. In the end I'm not mad but i ain't happy either.

Best Costume Design:
who won it: Black Panther
who deserved it: Any of them
I wasn't mad with this category at all. I actually had a chance to see all of these films and they all make sense to me nomination wise. The Favourite was my favorite going into the category, but I was really happy with the Black Panther win as well. This is another one of my favorite categories solely based on what the actual costume designers are wearing, and Ruth E. Carter Brought. It.
Here's the nominees since I was down with all of them: Black Panther, Favourite, Mary Poppins, Mary Queen of Scots, Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Best Makeup and Hairstyling:
who won it: Vice
who deserved it: Vice
Let it be know that I am obsessed with the shit show that was the winners trying to accept their award. Their shit show was definitely warranted given that they did really great work on Vice. Border and Mary Queen of Scots also had really good makeup, Mary... especially since they were able to ugly Margot Robbie the hell up.

Best Visual Effects:
who won it: First Man
who deserved it: First Man/ The Marvel Squad
I sadly hate gratuitous CGI, but I have to give credit where credit is due. First Man luckily looked pretty realistic unlike its competition, and I like that. This was also hard for me because I have a thing against Marvel movies, but Wakanda and Avengersville looked great, so there. Thanos was also a little bit of a hottie, creds to Marvel.
Now for the final two awards, which also happen to be two of my favorites. And let me tell you, one of these winners might just have pissed me off more than G****n B**k winning. Shall we...
Best Cinematography:
who won it: Roma
who deserved it: Roma, Cold War, and *SNUB ALERT* Beale St.
I thoroughly support Alfonso's win. Roma managed to pull of cheese free black and white. You know who else was able to pull of ye olde B&W, everyone's favorite Polish film, Cold War. I loved the look of Roma, but I almost feel like this should've gone to Cold War. Roma's cinematography was very dreamy and brought an element of magical realism to the film. Cold War's cinematography was colder and more experimental which made for an entertaining viewing experience. That being said, JAMES LAXTON WAS ROBBED. He was robbed in 2017 and he's been robbed again this year, except unlike fellow cult of Barry Jenkins member, Nicholas Britell, James wasn't even nominated this year. Ughhhhhhh this makes me so madddd. JFC. Barry Jenkins has a way of assembling the most talented composers, cinematographers, editors, actors for his films. His films wouldn't be what they are if they were missing a member of the crew. The first 30 seconds of Beale St. almost made me cry actual tears it was so beautiful. And the scene when Oscar Winner™ Regina gets of the plane in Puerto Rico, oh my goddddddddd. The perfume counter, omggggggg. I understand (not really) why he lost out in 2017, because La La Land did have really great visuals/camera work, but this shit just pisses me awf. BUt congrats to Alfonso, you deserved it bby.
I honestly don't think I can do this, so here's a video to help set the mood:
Best Editing:
who won it: The film that ruined Queen for me
who deserved it: *Chris Traeger voice* literally anyone else
I usually feel bad about shitting on creative people's work, but what the fuck. I went into a full state of shock followed by a self induced coma after they announced this award.I AM FURIOUSSSSS. I am in full on Mad Max Fury Road mode right now, and I am Furiosa. This shit is disgusting. Watching Bohemian Rhapsody was a very physical experience for me, in that I was cringing so hard the entire time that I quite possibly broke my neck from it. And the editing, oh the editing. It's not that it was bad per se, but it wasn't good. And Green Book was nominated too? C'mon people. Vice had good editing, though it wasn't Big Short level good. I don't really think McKay's style of editing worked as well with Vice as it did the money one. The editing in the Favourite was really great. But Blackkklansman was soooo good. I tried my best to trauma-blot Bohemian Rhapsody from my memory, but what I do remember was that the cheese factor in its editing was through the roof. I'm just not feeling this at all. But at least it didn't win best picture.
Since I had some trouble coming up with a list of snubs, I'll just leave you with this image that perfectly sums up my thoughts on the 91st Oscars. Goodnight.
