why's the title so damn long?

I liked Three Billboards but that's about it. I think i would've liked it a lot more if i hadn't seen any of McDonagh's other films before, because In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths are two of my favorite movies. No hate to three billboards, but it just felt okay in comparison.

I think what the movie was really missing was the level of batshit craziness that his other 2 films brought - and i mean full on batshit, Martin doesn't mess around. In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths both have ridiculous plotlines that arent necessarily supposed to go anywhere. In Bruges was basically 2 hours of Colin Farrell complaining about bruges while also being hunted down by Ralph Finnes (aka voldemort, or the really bad nazi that was also kind of attractive from Schindlers List). and Seven Psycopaths is just full out apeshit. It has a whiny Colin Farrell, a shitzou fueled desert shootout, and Christopher damn Walken. That's not to say Three billboards didn't have it's moments, but i can't remember any of them. I do think Sam Rockwells character managed to somewhat live up to his 7 psychopaths role, but I wouldn't call it his best role ( sam was robbed for Moon). His character felt very forced and kind of tame, though i do think he was the only person who could've done that character justice.

For me, it felt like McDonaghs first two films were to crazy to appeal to a large audience, but i guess third times the charm. You could also kind of tell that someone who wasn't american wrote it. I did love that the ever iconic ™ Frances McDormand's character was an ass kicking equality freak, but she definitely didnt fit in to the social landscape (?) of Missouri- the heart of red america. I get that people like her do exist in the middle of trumpville usa, but her characterization was way over the top. I feel like Mcdounagh ( im calling him marty from now on because im too lazy to type out his last name) used her character as a mouthpiece to air his own america related grievances. I've read so many reviews where they called her character "woke" and i've never wanted to be put down more in my life. And also i think that that god forsaken section of america is so american that you have to really have a good feel for it to write it realistically.

Now about the ending. It used to have me seething but now im just pissed. In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths both had endings that left me sitting there all "excuse me, what tf?", but i was still satisfied after they were over. I wanted more, but was also cool with what id been given. The ol' 3B's on the other hand, just left me angry and wanting more. sometimes i'll watch a movie and in the last ten minutes i'll see a ton of places it could've ended, but am usually pleased with the eventual ending (except for The Town, ben affleck deserves to go to hell for that ending) . Wen it came to this movie, there were a shit ton of places i thought it would've/should've ended but it didn't. It gave too much to be truly ambiguous, but not enough to give you a satisfying wrap up.

I also thought there would be a twist, like in his other two movies. I was rooting for woody to be the killer. And i genuinely thought that was going to happen, especially when Sam was reading that letter and the station burned up before he could finish it. Deep down, I still know Willoughby - may he rest in peace- killed her. That was the other thing, he killed himself which makes him look pretty pretty pretty guilty. what really got me was when the aggressive guy - who came out of absolute nowhere- decides to enter into bad bitch France's place of work and threaten her. That character had no place in the film and the more i think about it the angrier i get. Marty, wtf girl? And then my girl Abbie Cornish. they did her dirty. I get that shes Martys girl, but how in the hell am i supposed to believe that an australian would be living in the middle of BFN Missouri. ijs, im just sayin.

i've come to the conclusion that the one thing missing from this movie was resident whiny Irishman, Colin Farrell. I know damn well that he can do an american accent and he would have taken this movie from lukewarm bad-assery to full fledged batshit crazy. Plus, my two favorite roles of his where the ones from Martys other films. The only thing i have left to say is #justice4colin.

Three Billboards (im not typing out the rest of this title) gets 3/5 OKs
